The job of a music educator is an important one that can have a lasting impact on many young, impressionable lives. Those of us who have been in the classroom as music educators know that there are many lessons learned “about” the job while “on” the job; especially in the first year.

The following is a video interview/conversation between me and my good friend/colleague Matt Marvuglio, Dean of Berklee’s Professional Performance Division. This clip, filmed in the Fall of 2007, contains some advice for new music teachers, including practical ideas I wish I’d known before my first day teaching! I hope this segment proves helpful to those of you just starting out.

What other tips or advice would you offer folks just entering this rewarding field?
